if i were....

dressed & undressed

Nott opened ‘if i were a carpenter.’ on February 8 2013, with a varied selection of tables, chairs, stools, and smaller handcrafted domestic objects of a very practical nature. Nott uses only recycled timber. What is very striking about his designs are the ways in which the timber is allowed to reveal itself. Sometimes a surface has been stripped back, revealing the grain, the heart beneath, on other occasions the surface is preserved, evidencing the caressing hand of weather and time, or even their ravages.

Nott’s carefully dressed timber has a lustre, even a glow proclaiming its rebirth, while timber left in its found state, is incorporated into furniture proudly displaying a patina expressing a previous existence. In his tables both sit comfortably alongside each other. And more surprisingly these creations can come with a metal components, even metal mechanisms that have a practical function – for instance, to elevate or lower a table top. The metal usually strikes an industrial pose, proclaiming strength, but  occasionally it’s there to dispense a little whimsy. Then again you will find smaller pieces of metal, inserted into the wood, carefully shaped and finished, creating highlights, and points of interest.
